Zinc supplementation: Zinc is a critical nutrient with a narrow therapeutic window. Too much can be a problem. Toxicity can occur with intake above 40mg daily over long periods of time, this includes all sources of intake including foods. There are tests that can measure Zinc levels in the body. I usually recommend not supplementing with any more than 20mg daily unless known deficiency is present.

How much Zinc?: There are no well described ill-effects of taking zinc but it is generally not a good idea to take supplements that may not be needed. Zinc deficiency is not a common occurrence in a people eating usual diet.
