A member asked:

After lefort i and bsso, should your teeth touch constantly whilst the bones are healing? or would that stress the jaw muscles?

Best to ...: Follow up with the surgeons and your orthodontist for their recommendations.

Depends: You probably had rigid fixation, where your jaws were not wired. If so, your teeth would only touch during chewing or swallowing. You should not clench your teeth. Make sure you stay in close contact with your surgeon about questions like this.

Harmful: Teeth should only actually touch when you swallow without a bolus of food in your mouth, 2x/minute wile awake, 1x/minute while asleep, a total of about 2 minutes/day. Clenching and/or grinding can cause damage and slow healing.
