A member asked:

How does lying to others affect someone's mental health?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It depends: In my experience, it depends on one's own character structure. On one extreme, based on working with sociopathic inmates who appear incapable of empathy, it can appear to have little impact. For those capable of experiencing empathy for others and, with that, guilt and remorse, it can cause profound disturbances of the self, as well as increase anxiety and depression.
