A member asked:

How does culture shape one's understanding of health and disease?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Huge question: Each of us are taught ideas about healthy practices and the causes and meaning of sickness that are outside of science. A person may be taught that disease is divine punishment, that a certain condition (even something like being red-headed or left-handed) is something one needs to be terribly ashamed of, that scientific medicine is against "the true religion", and so forth.
