Why do children and the elderly get sick more often than teenagers and middle-aged adults?

Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Waxing & waning: In children, their immune system is still developing, such that they haven't reached their peak potential yet and thus are at increase risk for infections. That's why we also have more vaccinations scheduled in early childhood. As we get past middle-age, our immune system wanes and increases similar risk for infections.
