We're just now: noticing it. Seriously, it's probably gotten as bad as it's ever possible to get. Recent years the incidence has leveled off in the US (but not worldwide). bad eating habits develop in childhood as does the pattern of what is comfort food. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1775472781/1708440999?token=378a5145
