The most common: problem would be a strain of the neck. This can range from muscle strain to disc rupture. Fortunately, most of these things will get better with time. Anti-inflammatory medicines often help a great deal. Try taking Naprosyn (naproxen) which is available over the counter, twice a day. As far as which test might be helpful, an MRI of the neck can be a useful for persistent neck pain. Good luck.
