Medications used to treat hypothyroidism: Most common medication is Levothyroxine , brand name = Synthroid. The goal is to have thyroid levels within normal limits-the blood test is TSH. Probably should be treated rest of your life, since Hypothyroid is not usually cured , but controlled. Hypothyroid is usually due to decreased function due to prior viral infection,or no function due to prior surgical removal of thyroid gland
