Kidney infections: The best prevention for kidney infections is good hygiene. Most kidney infections start in the bladder and are from bacteria that live on the skin of the penis or in the vaginal vault. Women, after intercourse, should urinate within a few hours. Make sure you don't hold your bladder for an absurd about of time since the act of urination flushes these bacteria from the urethra.

Drink more water: The best prevention of urinary tract infections and kidney infections is to increase your daily water intake. As long as there are no anatomical abnormalities, drinking more water will not cure the problem but will definitely decrease your chances of an infection. If this fails, then a daily low dose antibiotic will be needed to help suppress the bacterial load in the urinary tract.

Avoid & treat UTIs: Firstly try and avoid getting a lower urinary tract infection, ie cranberry juice or pills, shower rather than bathe, urinate after sex, wear cotton underwear & not thongs, drink plenty of water and don't withold urination. Secondly treat any UTI asap with antibiotics to prevent infection from ascending to kidneys.
