I woke up with a sore (mostly dry) throat yesterday and now i am congested- could it just be from the change of the season or could it be a virus?

Can't tell but: if the nasal discharge is clear and there is no itching , sneezing spells, or itchy eyes, you are likely catching a cold. If you had similar symptoms in previous years at about the same time, then it is more likely from allergies. Only time will tell for sure.
