Infection: Pharyngitis, a throat inflammation, is most commonly due to a viral infection which usually resolves without any specific treatment within a week. If the sore throat worsens instead of gradually improving, a throat culture to check for strep is recommended as this would be treated with antibiotics. Gargle with warm salt water, suck on lozenges and take Tylenol (acetaminophen) in the meantime.
