GVHD: occurs when bone marrow stem cells and/or immune cells have been engrafted from one individual into another. Except in identical twins, differences in cellular antigens cause engrafted cells to react against the host tissues and cause an inflammatory injury. Acutely, symptoms may affect the skin, liver, or gut; whereas chronic GVHD may affect the eyes, mouth, fascia, and lungs.
