Most commonly done to cover sensitive or exposed unattractive roots and defects in the tissue hampering your ability to clean the area, and to help maintain the bone around the tooth, to keep the tooth.

Two types: Two types-- in a "free" graft the surgeon takes tissue from the palate and stitched it pedicle over tooth area where the gum has receded. A pedicle graft uses gum in the area of recession and the surgeon repositions the gum to cover the receded area. The grafts remains partially attached at all times. I hope this helps.
