Practicalities: Inulin is a strange sugar from the root of chicory and dahlias. It's a researcher's tool for a somewhat more accurate estimate of glomerular filtration than is offered by creatinine clearance. The latter, however, is readily available from blood and urine samples and requires no injection, so it's what is usually used clinically.
