It depends...: Some sprains are severe, involve multiple ligaments and create joint instability, possibly requiring surgery. Some are very mild and only involve rest. The same variability occurs with fractures. Some fractures are unstable and require hardware fixation. Some fractures only require brief immobilization. The key is an accurate diagnosis, very specific treatment advice and often rehabilitation.
