My question is is if you had a 16 year oldpatient that doesn't smoke drink or chew. And had a lump inside their tongue. Inside. Would you think cancer?

Have it evaluated: Any lesion like that that has not resolved on its own in a two to three week period should be examined. See a local oral surgeon for guidance.

See a dentist or OS: When there is rough patch on your tongue, you'd better take immediate measures to find out its reason. See your dentist for examination.

Oral exam: If you have a red or white lesion either flat or raised see a dentist for exam and possible biopsy.

Oral cancer: screening is looking for cancer before a patient has any symptoms or developed a disease. There are number of tests that are used to screen for different types of cancer. Screening for oral cancer is done during a routine check-up by a dentist or any medical doctor. For majority types of cancer, the chance of recovery is better if is found and treated at an early stage.

You're right: It is rare. But never impossible. My previous advice still stands... have it examined. You want reassurance that your lesion is nothing to worry about, and that really can't be done over the internet. If it is there more than three weeks, have it examined by an oral surgeon.
