Oral antiviral drugs: Oral antiviral drugs, such as acyclovir and several others, are effective in preventing outbreaks of cold sores, decreasing the severity of sores, and shortening the healing time of sores. Topical lip balms with anti-viral abilities can help, but not as much as the oral medications do. If a lip is looking worse instead of looking better, one can see her doctor for an antiviral prescription.

Mixed therapy: Actclovur applied directly to a cold sore does not work nearly as well as taking daily suppressive therapy with acyclovir or valcyclovir. The swelling is inevitable with a mucocutaneous lip reaction, so therapy is supportive - acyclovir orally and whatever anti-inflammatory is best as adjunctive treatment - I suggest ibuprofen
