Varies: If your mom has real severe stenosis in her cervical spine, there may not be a lot of choice. Severe cervical stenosis can cause a condition known as myelopathy in which can lead to losing the ability to walk independently. In general, neck surgery is fairly safe and successful, although certainly each case is different. I would certainly make sure your mom understood the risks and benefits.
