Pain joint: swelling can be inflammatory, traumatic, infectious in a younger person. There are other things too that are rarer. Pain that has persisted for more than a few days should be evaluated. Questions include history of puncture, laceration, recent illness, other joints that hurt, diet, metabolic disorder, inflammatory arthritis, thyroid, diabetes, Lyme and the list goes on...... Best see your doctor
