Orthodontic Consult: Please consult with a local orthodontist who can actually examine you and treat you. Your problem may require a team approach, which can also include a periodontist. Gummy smiles can either be caused by overgrown gum tissue or a high lip line, two conditions that cannot be diagnosed over the internet. Your problem may also be skeletal in nature.

Cause of Gummy Smile: The cause of a "Gummy Smile" may be due to a malocclusion, skeletal problem, periodontal problem, facial variation or a combination of these. The cause will dictate the solution. I recommend you start by seeing a General Dentist who can personally evaluate your particular situation and refer you to appropriate specialist(s) in order to improve your smile.

See an orthodontist: for evaluation, records and treatment options. In the majority of cases orthodontic treatment may correct a "gummy smile." Take care.

Not likely: Gummy smile has more to do with jaw size and position and lip length and facial muscles. See an Oral Surgeon to determine if it is a skeletal concern or simply excess tissue. If not too severe AND the teeth are too far out of position, then perhaps braces will help. Most likely would involve repositioning jaw. However, never know until you get it checked by the specialist. Good Luck.

Depends on cause: If cause is short teeth, excess gingival coverage, or vertical maxillary excess, braces alone will not suffice. If you have steep mandibular plane it short upper lip, braces alone will not suffice. If you have deep vertical overbite with extruded incisors, braces are best bet. Ask your Dentist to coordinate Rx w a Orthodontist, a Periodontist, & Oral Surgeon. Plan carefully.

Not enough info: Braces are used to fix the position of teeth to improve appearance and function. You don't say if whether your teeth are in good position. Talk to your dentist about your concerns and see if an orthodontist referral is the best choice for you. If another dental specialist would be more helpful, ask what kind and get a referral.

Possibly: If upper teeth are over erupted and/or protrusive then straightening them can reduce gummy appearance. If problem is skeletal rather than dental, a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery may be required. Best recommendation, see a qualified Orthodontic specialist (Initial Examination usually free) for an evaluation of hour malocclusion and the treatment options that are available.
