Can mri tell if there is inflammation/swelling of a muscle in a leg or must it be compared to the other leg?

MRI can tell: as long as the correct "sequences" were performed. One type of sequence looks specifically for fluid in the soft tissues, and it is very sensitive. You don't need the opposite side compared. If you would like a complete explanation of your MRI, I provide second opinions via HealthTap Concierge @ healthtap.com/saurbornmd
