Urticaria (hives): Red, raised itchy rash responsive to antihistamines sounds like hives. Acute hives usually resolve within a few days but can last weeks. Hives can become chronic if symptoms last over 6 weeks. Commonly, viral/bacterial infections can trigger an outbreak, however medications, foods, and insect stings can also cause acute hives but have the potential to lead to more serious complications.
