There are several: different possibilities. Osgood-Schlatters is inflammation at the growth plate below the knee. Chondromalacia patella is softening of the cartilage behind the kneecap. And patellofemoral syndrome is abnormal motion of the kneecap in the groove of the femur. All 3 are common causes of pain in an adolescent athelete and can be differentiated on exam.
