Cord: make sure clean it well with alcohol and apply antibiotic ointment on it

Back to GP: Sometimes it takes a while for the belly button area to close after the umbilical stump has fallen off. Sometimes a health care provider can chemically treat the area in the office to promote healing. If the area has a foul odor then this may be a sign of infection. Also look for redness and swelling around the belly button as well as a fussy baby.
