A 91-year-old member asked:

My BP went very high because I went by ambulance to er. Should they have given me something first?

Not necessarily: Stressful situations will often elevate blood pressures. If you are not having symptoms related to blood pressure elevation- such as headaches, cardiac pain or stroke symptoms : sometimes lowering the blood pressure can actually worsen the situation.

Dr. Pedro Hernandez

Difficult: Most HTN pts require at least 3 different drugs to control hypertension. The guidelines recommend to start with low dose diuretics but it is ok to use calcium channel blockers like amlodipine or beta blockers like metoprolol.( especially if they have coronary disease or atrial fibrillation). Acei's like Lisinopril are also good for CHF and in diabetics. Arbs:diovan or losartan have good profile.

A 42-year-old member asked:

I need help relaxing, it's becoming a huge problem for my bp. How to relax?

Dr. Roshni Patel

Relax therapy: Exercise is the most natural way to improve mood and decrease tension. 30 min of nonstop cardiovascular movement is what the american heart assoc defines as exercise. For ex. Brisk walk, jog, run, swim. The vigor of activity should be enough to make you feel like you are working hard. Deep breathing may also help. 3 deep breaths in a row, each held for 5 seconds, and released.
A 38-year-old member asked:

Is 102/69 BP normal?

2 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Marc Hirsch
Family Medicine 52 years experience
It can be.: Lower than average (120/80) blood pressures can be normal. If you are not lightheaded or dehydrated, 102/69 is perfectly acceptable. Especially if your heart rate is less than 90. Make sure you're drinking several glasses of water or more a day and you're urinating regularly. If you have further doubts, see a doctor and have them check you out.
