Fever >101F: In an 8 year old a true fever is a temp >38.3ºC (101ºF). Fever of unknown origin is diagnosed in children with fever of at least 8 days duration in whom no diagnosis is apparent after initial evaluation. If his temp is in the above range he requires evaluation by pediatrician: physical exam, recent clinical history, possible lab work including CBC/diff, UA, cultures, CXR, etc depending on findings

Prolonged fevers: Prolonged true fevers without other symptoms are concerning enough to warrant evaluation for 'Fever of Unknown Origin'. This is an extensive evaluation so make sure these temperature readings are real buy using an oral thermometer only (transcutaneous and tympanic membrane thermometers are not reliable).
