Incompetent cervix: Silent dilatation of the cervix exposes the waterbag to bacteria in the vagina. This in turn triggers contractions on the one hand, and causes the water bag to break on the other. Many facts in the processes of preterm labor and incompetent cervix are still unknown, which is why we don't have definitive treatment.

Painless Dilation: The diagnosis of incompetent cervix is best made by your Ob/Gyn; however, the general idea is that you have painless cervical dilation before painful labor. Most Ob/Gyns now recommend progesterone supplementation in pregnancy if you have had a prior pre-term birth. Best wishes!
