Osteoporosis: There is only one way for now. You need to have your doctor refer you for a bone density test. You will lie on a table and the technician will measure your bone density in the lumbar spine (low end of the bones in your back), your hip area, and maybe also your forearm. Osteoporosis is present if the bone mineral density at one or more sites is lower than -2.5. Should not be a problem at age 38.

DEXA scan: A DEXA scan is an x-ray type test that measures bone density in the lumbar spine, hip, and wrist. Your bone density is then compared to a young normal population of females (or males) to determine your "T-score" (standard deviation). A score of -1 to 0 is normal, -2.4 to -1.0 is osteopenia, -2.5 or lower is osteoporosis.
