Physical examination: Hemorrhoids ("piles") are thin-walled, dilated veins of the anus and rectum. They are usually the result of excessive exertion with defecation. They are easily diagnosed by physical examination. The most common treatments involve modifications of the diet to increase water and roughage (fiber). In most cases, surgical treatments are unnecessary and potentially harmful.
