We don't know: We are still very stupid when it comes to what and how autism occurs. We also know there are several different types - at least one where symptoms are present almost from birth, and one where child seems to be doing ok and then regresses. It is likely it is many things combined - you are born with the tendency toward getting it, but then something like a viral infection actually pulls the trigger.

Collective term: It is obvious that the label is applied to several differing problems that share common features. Studies of affected patients has shown several different chromosome changes (codon insertions) involving different chromosomes on the level of the genome. The studies have been limited so far but show that while not evident until late in infancy, the blueprint for autism may be encoded before birth.

Not researchers, who: Have found that autism, like asthma & diabetes type i, has many genetic "set-ups" or epigenetic factors that alter function, but not structure or sequence of fetal genes. These impact fetal brain development in ways that allow "triggers" to cause signs of ASD <age 3. Younger sibs of kids with ASD who had changes in white matter development on MRI at 6 mos. Showed signs of ASD 6-18 mos. Later.
