Hypochondriasis: Hypochondriasis, an "illness anxiety disorder," involves obsessive thinking, exaggerated concerns/catastrophizing & compulsive behaviors such as searching the internet for medical info, doctor shopping & avoiding areas of potential contamination. These behaviors temporarily reduce the anxiety but paradoxically reinforce the excessive preoccupation w/ health. CBT & meds often help. Good luck!

Hypochondria: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is often the most effective approach to treating hypochondria. Psychoeducation and exposure therapy have been used as well as treatment with antidepressant medications when warranted.
