Probably: oral herpes simplex is the most common virus to inhabit the mucosal region of the oral cavity. It most frequently lies dormant submucosally until a viral infection reduces the host immune local response and allows the virus to flare up. It appears in the form of a cold sore with possible swollen glands and a small pimple like lesion that eventually ulcerates. Then becomes dormant.
