Not necessarily: Early signs of Autistic Spectrum Disorder are usually deficits in pre-linguistic social communication & gradually diminishing eye-to- face gaze. A typical 4-month-old smiles, laughs, goos & coos reciprocally, matching open-vowel sounds that you make while looking & smiling at him. See first signs.org & healthychildren.org for screening tests. Video the movements to show his pediatrician.

Not really: Is your child doing this as a reaction to your face? Is your child doing this when you are not looking at him? This sounds like an interaction between you and your child so I do not think this is concerning. Is your child doing any other concerning behaviors? Is he fussy and irritable a lot? No eye contact or does not seem to be interested in people including you the parents?
