Interesting: It is hard to answer this without more information and an exam. I would like to know your age, history of surgery, or cough. It sounds like it may be a hernia but it could be simply muscle spasm causing a bulge that comes and goes. It could be an abdominal hernia. It could also be a herniated lung. It does need to be evaluated you a physician very soon.

Muscle spasm: This could be a muscle spasm. I have heard this description many times before. Hernias do not occur in the upper abdomen by the rib cage. They do occur in the middle. The muscle spasm can cause severe pain, and "ball up", mimicking a hernia. Best however to see your primary care provider for a more complete evaluation.
