It is low.: The treatment is with oral vitamin D. Often a high dose (50,000 IU per week) is prescribed for 6-8 weeks to reconstitute the body stores, followed by 1,000-2,000 IU daily. If this fails, one has to consider malabsoprtion (intestinal problems causing lack of absorption of vitamin D).
