In The Right Vein: Sometimes veins get inflamed usually, as you guessed, by minor trauma. They can then get a clot in them and that hurts too for a while. Those small superficial veins usually heal within a few weeks but may leave a lump for a longer time. A warm cloth intermittently and Motrin will help. But if it extends and/or the skin gets involved get it checked out.

Phlebitis: May be phlebitis (inflammation of the vein) for whatever reason. I suggest one aspirin per day, and a heating pad. Be diligent with the heating pad, and keep it on for hours at a time. Anti-inflammatory herbs like Turmeric and Boswella may also help.
