Soak it: Soak the finger in warm soapy water daily to keep it clean. Let the damaged portion fall off on its own. Have a doctor look at it if there are signs of infection: redness, swelling, increased pain, pus.

Yes: Keep the nail very short. Clip off the portion of nail not attached. Gently wash. Avoid bandaids, antiseptics, peroxide, bacitracin, neosporin, triple antibiotic. Lubricate with vaseline, hand cream. It takes 6 months to grow a new finger nail.
