Dehydrated?: A decrease in urination in children is usually an indicator of inadequate oral fluid intake and a degree of dehydration, which can cause a strong odor to the urine. Medications can also alter the odor of the urine.

Pee smell: The smell of pee when a kid is on amoxicillin or ampicillin (its sibling drug) is sometimes quite noticeable and amplified if urine is concentrated. If he is peeing at least every 8 hours he is likely okay but any less means he is not taking enough fluids. I don't consider the smell a problem.
