Borderline number: The TSH is thyroid stimulating hormone. It is the most sensitive indicator of thyroid function. It is produced from the pituitary gland and it tells the thyroid how much hormone to make. The higher it is the more underactive the thyroid is. The lower it is the more overactive the thyroid is. A TSH of 5 is borderline. It may normalize or increase. She should have this monitored every 6 months.
