A member asked:

I have been diagnosed as gestational diabetic, but it is diet controlled, does this automatically make me a high risk birth?

DM and Pregnancy: Gestational DM is considered high risk. First step to treatment is starting with a program of medical supervised nutritional therapy and self-monitoring of blood sugars. Insulin should be initiated if optimal blood glucose levels are not achieved with the Nutrition. These steps greatly improve perinatal outcome and course. You should also have a good exercise program as well. Good Luck

Higher risk.: but not necessarily much of a risk. insulin is a growth factor. if the baby is huge, then that is another issue, if fetal growth is normal and the sugar is controllable, it isnt much of a risk but somewhat higher.
