A member asked:

Dad has to take insulin for diabetes and drinks 2-3 beers and maybe 1 shot vodka about 5-6 days out of the week, what are the short/long term effects?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably OK: Hi. These cases are tough. That amount of alcohol is probably OK, but not if it's caused him any life problems (work, family, job, the law). If the drinks are spaced out and he's not inebriated, it's probably OK. I hope his diabetes is well controlled. I don't tell my diabetic patients not to drink, but I tell all patients not to be alcoholics. Do you (or any other people) think he has a problem?
