Low platelets: It depends on the unit but in the United States this would typically mean 13,000 platelets per microliter which is very low and is associated with a very high risk of bleeding.
There are many causes but this needs to be evaluated and treated urgently as this would be considered a medical emergency if the cause is not known.

When are hemotologists concerned about platelet count?

Less than 20,000: There is actually no magic number but most hematologists would worry about a platelet count less than 20, 000 especially if associated with signs of bleeding. Platelet counts lower than this have the highest risk for internal bleeding that could be life-threatening. The chronicity of the condition causing the low platelet count and the associated symptoms help the doctor decide on how to manage it.

Family practice : Your platelet count is a little elevated. It isn't high enough to be concerned. Check with your dr if he wants to follow levels.

A 38-year-old female asked:
What does it mean when my "platelet count" is 144?
1 doctor answer • 1 doctor weighed in

Dr. Devon Websteranswered
Medical Oncology 24 years experience
It's normal!: The range for normal platelets is between 150 and 300 in most labs. Your count of 144 is shorthand for 144,000 platelets per microliter of blood in your body. A microliter is about the tiniest water droplet you could see with your naked eye, about the size of the period in this sentence. So your count of 144 is just a little lower than normal, but not enough that I would be concerned.
