Feel: The apical pulse is felt by put the hand on the chest and using the heel of the hand to palpate the point of maximum impulse. This should be fairly easy to tell

Lowest outermost: If you put the palm of your hand on the left side of the chest, the lowest outermost pulsating area is the apex of the heart. It may be visible. In a female put you hand below the breast, thumb to one side so that palm can contact the chest wall. It lies in the fifth left intercostal space, 8 to 9 cm from the mid-sternal line, slightly medial to the midclavicular line.
