Leave it alone: There is no need to "clean" an oral herpes lesion (cold sore). Don't open the blisters or pimples and don't use swabs; these will just increase pain and delay healing. Wash softly with soap and water once a day. If you're not taking anti-herpes treatment, see or phone your doctor right away for a prescription. All it takes is 1 or 2 doses of valacyclovir, which will speed healing by several days.
