Signs & symptoms ?: Neurologists & psychiatrists refer to neuropsychologists when they need standardized tests of cognition, memory, attention, visual & auditory processing, executive functions, pro-social skills ,etc. to define functional impact of neurological & psychiatric disorders. See your primary physician for a history, physical & neurological exam for genetic & other medical causes & to direct referrals.

CREDENTIALING: A neuropsychologist holds either a PhD or a PsyD, and all he/she does is cognitive testing typically, not much therapy if at all. A neurologist is an MD or a DO and specializes in the biophysiological functioning of the nervous system. A psychiatrist is either an MD or a DO and specializes in psychiatric disorders and has the power to prescribe psychotropic medications. It depends on symptoms.
