Specific location: Shingles are going to be localized to the distribution of a specific nerve root & only on one side of the face.(never crosses the midline) It is often most painful before the spots emerge & rarely happens more than once.I've seen it as early as 15 months but it is unusual before late adulthood. If this happens repeatedly it is likely something else. An exam can confirm or exclude shingles.
