A member asked:

Is the loss of subcutaneous adipose tissue of the face in marasmus the first sign ? and does the child with marasmus has hypothermia?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Weight loss of FTT: (Failure to Thrive) would be first signs of nutrition deprivation and in a child would be expected to be noted first in overall growth and especially loose skin on buttocks and thighs and arms, but may be easier to noticed on face. Eyes will get sunken quite quickly with dehydration, which may have a different cause. Fatigue, irritability are common. Hypothermia would not be a first sign.
