No ....: it is meant to be taken long term. Esloric is a brand name allopurinol, a medicine which lowers uric acid & prevents gout. Almost everyone who takes this needs to take this long term....for years, often for the duration of his lifetime. It has been around a long time, and is considered very safe. Especially when balanced against the adverse metabolic & other effects of high uric acid.

Allopurinol : Is taken for Gout. Initial dosage is 100-200mg daily later increased to 300 mg. to 600 mg. the short term mild side effects include nausea vomiting and diarrhea. Serious ones are fever sore throat rash and bleeding from gums or in urine and later causes renal failure. There is also drug interactions with alcohol and some antibiotics. Consult your physician for individual scenario.

It depends:: There is no effect of long term harm from allopurinol. In a study on patients with elevated uric acid, those taking allopurinol had a 25% less chance of dying than those not on allopurinol. *But allopurinol can cause rare but very severe reactions in some patients. Though not common they can be fatal. It may be possible to lower uric acid by changes in lifestyle alone. SEE COMMENTS
