See MD: But in the meantime, pain meds like nsaids or tylenol (acetaminophen) can help (nsaids are better for pain and inflammation if your stomach can take it). You may also want to use a numbing throat spray like chloraseptic to get you over the hump. Slippery elm bark and/or bismuth (e.g., pepto-bismol) can help coat and soothe your throat. Honey can help, too--try it with lemon in tea!
