Rule out GERD: First a throat culture will rule out a bacterial infection. If the culture is negative for pathogenic bacteria, a common cause of persistent sore throat is LPR (laryngo-pharyngeal reflux). This is high reflux arising from acid in the stomach and coming up high into the esophagus and spilling over into the upper respiratory tract and chemically irritating the throat.
